Mulled Wine, Zinfandel Style

As the holidays approach and the temperatures drop, there’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm, spiced drink to share with friends and family. Mulled wine, with its rich history and festive flavors, is a time-honored tradition that has graced winter gatherings for centuries. This holiday season, elevate your mulled wine with a twist—use Zinfandel as your base for a bold and flavorful take on this classic drink.

The Origins and Traditions of Mulled Wine

Mulled wine dates back to the Roman Empire, where wine was heated and spiced to ward off the winter chill. The practice spread across Europe, with each region adding its unique touches. Known as glühwein in Germany, vin chaud in France, and glogg in Nordic countries, mulled wine became a staple of holiday markets and gatherings.

Today, mulled wine is synonymous with the cozy, communal spirit of the holidays. It’s a drink meant to be shared, whether at a festive Christmas market or around a roaring fireplace at home. Its combination of spices—like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise—evokes the warmth and joy of the season, making it the perfect beverage for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just a chilly evening with loved ones.

Why Zinfandel is the Perfect Base For Mulled Wine

Zinfandel’s rich, fruity profile and subtle spice make it an excellent choice for mulled wine. Its notes of blackberry, plum, and black cherry create a luscious base, while its hints of pepper and cinnamon enhance the spiced elements of the drink.

Choosing Zinfandel for your mulled wine ensures a robust flavor that stands up to the addition of spices, citrus, and sweeteners. Here are some recommended Zinfandels to use:

  • Comstock 2017 Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley): With its bold fruit and spice, this wine shines in a mulled recipe.
  • Rombauer Zinfandel: Known for its jammy fruit and smooth finish, it’s an excellent option.
  • Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel: Offers a balance of fruit and structure, perfect for mulling.

Whatever wine you choose, whether you are using Zinfandel or another varietal, make sure it is something you would want to drink without it being warmed and spice. When you are cooking with wine you should always pick a wine you would want to drink.

Zinfadel Mulled Wine Recipe

Time:

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle Zinfandel wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional, for extra warmth)
  • 1/4 cup honey or brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 oranges (one juiced, one sliced into rounds)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 5–6 whole cloves
  • 3–4 star anise pods
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg (freshly grated, if possible)
  • 1 apple, sliced (optional, for added fruitiness)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, combine the Zinfandel, brandy, honey, orange juice, and spices. Add the orange and apple slices.
  2. Heat Gently: Warm the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil, as this can cook off the alcohol. Simmer gently for 20–30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Taste and Adjust: Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness or spice level to your liking.
  4. Serve: Ladle the warm mulled wine into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick and/or orange slice for a festive touch. And for even more color add some fresh cranberries as well.

Serving Tips and Storage:

Zinfandel mulled wine is best enjoyed fresh to savor its aromatic spices and vibrant flavors. However, it can be stored if you have leftovers or want to prepare it in advance:

  • Storage Tips: Allow the mulled wine to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days.
  • Reheating Instructions: Gently reheat on low heat, being careful not to let it boil, as boiling can alter the flavors of the wine.
While it’s convenient to reheat, freshly made mulled wine always offers the most robust and well-balanced flavor.

A Drink for Every Holiday Gathering

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner, a Christmas party, or a casual evening by the fire, Zinfandel mulled wine is the perfect centerpiece. Here’s why:

  • For Gatherings: It’s an easy-to-make, crowd-pleasing drink that fills your home with the aroma of the holidays.
